FROM THE CHAIRMAN

The Valborg Celebration at Norman Farm was attended by many of our members and the weather decided to cooperate. Games, hot dogs, songs to celebrate Spring, and a large fire provided by Drott Lodge, American Scandinavian Association, and Swedish Women’s Educational Association made it a fun and traditional celebration in the Swedish spirit. Thanks for attending and thank you to all who volunteered at the event.

On May 18 we will visit the College Park IKEA for a private tour. Sign up by clicking HERE. Please let us know if you plan to attend so we can inform IKEA how many to expect. This event is free and open to Drott members and guests.

Summer is right around the corner, and June is shaping up to be a month full of exciting activities and opportunities to connect. With the longer days and warmer weather, it's the perfect time to come together, explore new experiences, and enjoy everything the season has to offer. Be sure to check out our upcoming events—you won’t want to miss what we have planned!

Drott Lodge is pleased to offer members and guests an exclusive private tour of the acclaimed photo exhibition Snow and Rain Shall Pass by by Swedish photographer Karin Alfredsson at the House of Sweden in on June 19. Don’t miss this opportunity to experience the exhibit in an intimate setting with fellow members. Advance registration is required.

We look forward to being part of the new Swedish Midsummer Festival that will take place at the National Mall down in Washington D.C. on Midsummer Eve, June 20. There will be a Midsummer celebration with traditional song and dance, followed by Swedish musical acts on the Sylvan Theatre stage. This event is sponsored by the Swedish Embassy.

Drott Lodge and other organizations will help setup, prepare the May pole, teach Swedish songs to the guests, and clean up after the event.

We need your help, so please let us know if you can be part of our team. This event is free and open to the public.

We will, of course, host our traditional Midsummer celebration at Carderock Park, MD on June 22. I first attended this event in 1998 when my older son was little. It’s a fun, small scale event for families in a wonderful park setting.

Please check our calendar for more details on these events and sign up early.  It makes it easier for the planning committees to provide the best events possible.  After this flurry of activity, we'll be taking a short summer break. Our calendar will be full again come September, with plenty of exciting events and gatherings to look forward to!

In Generosity, Truth and Unity,

Karin Weeden

Chairman

June Bride?

One of the cultural mementos from the early days in Sweden is the bridal wedding crown. Drott Lodge has a bridal crown which it proudly lends to its brides.

The tradition of wearing a wedding crown-- not so common anymore in Sweden--dates back to the Catholic times of the Middle Ages. The crown was a symbol of chastity and virginity as part of the traditions surrounding the Virgin Mary.

Member spotlight: Ingalill Mason

I was born in Stockholm and came to the US in 1965. I connect with dear old Sweden every summer when my husband and I go there for three months. It helps to keep my heart very Swedish. I met my husband at the mailbox! He was my American pen pal and we have been married for 60 years. I spent my glorious summers with my grand parents on Gotland and it too is in my heart.

I took my occupational therapist training in Sweden where I worked before coming to the US. Here, I worked with the Woodmont Weavers, an Arlington County adult developmental program. I played on a ladies soccer team until I was 50 - when we won the Arlington County championship. I have danced with the Nordic Dancers, including once in the hallway of the Kennedy Center!

Over the years, I have been involved with Drott, SWEA, and ASA. For several years, I was part of the group that made all the Princess Tortes for the SWEA bazar.

Our son and daughter both live in northern Virginia. Every Christmas we assemble at our son’s home to dance around the Christmas tree. Inviting friends to share this culture. Our children, grand children and yes even great grand children all embrace this Swedishness.
